Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress

Chapter 1754

Chapter 1754: Gone

Meanwhile...

Shawn looked back at the backseat. Penny was still unconscious, which wasn't surprising. After all, the shot he gave her was a strong dosage meant to keep her down.

Letting out a deep breath, he faced forward.

"She has shadow guards around," he said. "They'll definitely follow us. I barely bought enough time before they catch up."

The driver remained silent, calm even as their speed steadily increased. "I already see one behind us."

"Don't bother with them," Shawn said. "Just try to lose them. They won't do anything but follow."

He paused, glancing at the side mirror. "They won't risk hurting her in a chase."

Just as planned. It was the reason why, even after Penny gave him the code, he still took her. If he hadn't, her men would've pursued them to the ends of the earth and it wouldn't just be a deadly chase. Gunfire could erupt while they were still on the road.

"A confrontation with them isn't part of the plan," Shawn added. "Just keep driving. I'll handle it if they get too close."

The driver gave no reply, focusing solely on the road.

Several cars behind, Mark swerved across lanes, earning blaring honks from other drivers on the highway-but he didn't care. His eyes were locked on the black sedan several cars ahead. He couldn't afford to lose it.

Teddy, still holding his breath, was practically fused to his seat. His heart leaped every time Mark changed lanes. It was reckless, but necessary.

"That's their car!" he shouted, pointing. "I know it-I memorized it."

Mark didn't answer, already zeroed in on the vehicle.

"Say, Teddy... what's going on?"

"I don't know." Teddy shook his head. "Honestly, I'm just as confused. I—I—"

He pinched the bridge of his nose, rattled and overwhelmed. "All I was trying to do was go back and help Shawn finish his task. He said he was staying behind for that. But when I came back, I..."

"God, I don't even know," he muttered, distressed. "I just saw Miss Penny and Shawn together, and he was holding a gun to her back. Like she was some kind of hostage."

Mark's face remained unreadable, eyes fixed ahead. He didn't close in, choosing to maintain a careful distance from the other vehicle.

"How come he didn't see you?" he asked, his tone cold and laced with suspicion.

"I hid!" Teddy snapped, ignoring the undertone. "When I came back to the office, Miss Penny gave me this look-an angry one-so I just... instinctively hid. If I hadn't, Shawn would've spotted me."

And honestly, Teddy didn't even want to imagine what would've happened if he had been caught.

"But what I do know is that Miss Penny is in that car!" he insisted, jabbing a finger toward the windshield. "I'm sure of it!"

Mark said nothing, continuing to tail the vehicle. Meanwhile, Teddy ran his hands through his hair, visibly distressed.

It had been a long time since Teddy had felt this kind of panic. He could barely keep it together. This was someone's life they were talking about-Penny's life. And not seeing even her shadow in the car only made his mind race to the worst conclusions.

"Right!" Teddy suddenly exclaimed, pulling out his phone. "I need to call the police!"

"Don't bother."

"Huh?" Confused, Teddy looked up at Mark. "What do you mean?"

Mark's eyes glinted. "All we can do now is follow. If we involve the police, it'll agitate them and cause more panic."

"Miss Penny is in that car," he added firmly. "Her safety is my priority."

Teddy gripped his phone, struggling to accept that reasoning. But then he noticed Mark's white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel as if he was barely restraining himself too.

Clenching his jaw, Teddy slowly lowered his phone and nodded. He turned to the windshield, determined to keep his eyes on the sedan. Mark wouldn't lose it, but having two sets of eyes was better than one.

At the same time...

Slater pulled into a hospital driveway and looked toward the entrance. Letting out a shallow breath, he parked in a nearby space. Once the engine stopped, he reached for a cap, a face mask, and sunglasses.

One of the cons of being a celebrity, there were many places where he needed to disguise himself.

Once he was sure his face was covered, Slater stepped out of the car and made his way into the hospital. He bypassed reception entirely, already knowing the room number he was headed to. He headed straight for the elevator to the VIP

ward.

DING!

He looked up at the floor display and walked out unhesitatingly, turning left. Slater tipped his cap down further as he moved through the hallway. When he reached the end, he spotted two bodyguards in suits flanking a door.

As he approached, both men extended their arms, blocking the way.

Slater stopped, peering over his sunglasses.

"It's me," he said, tipping his glasses down slightly.

"Hey," he called, walking back toward them.

Stopping a step away, he darted his eyes between the two. Then, with a small

smile creeping onto his face, he squinted.

"I don't know you."

The guards just stared. Then, they exchanged a glance and moved.

One reached for Slater, while the other drew a gun.

But before either could act, Slater disarmed the one drawing the gun in a single

move. A sharp kick to the gut followed. Then-

Click.

The safety on the pistol clicked as he pointed it at the second man.

"One more move, and I'll shoot you in the face," he warned coldly.

A chilling frost coated his gaze.
