Chapter 26
Chapter 26 Struggle
"Daniel! You were once engaged to Jasmine. How can you treat her like this with no remorse?" Richard's voice seethed with
rage.
"Remorse? A family of con artists talking about remorse? When she was cheating on me and having another man's baby, where
was her conscience then?" Daniel warned Richard. "Hand her over, or else..."
Groggy, Jasmine awoke to the sound of Daniel's voice and began to tremble.
Standing on shaky legs, she faced Daniel. "I'll go with you... just spare my brother and Justin."
Jasmine saw Daniel as a madman who was capable of anything.
After last night's humiliation, she knew he was capable of harming Richard and Justin today.
"Jasmine, you're burning up. We need to get to the hospital," Richard said, his voice laced with anxiety.
"I'm fine, Richard..." Jasmine said shakily. She headed towards Daniel and, without hesitation, got into the car.
Daniel seemed pleased with her compliance, his gaze softening significantly.
He was aware, somewhere deep down, that he might have gone too far last night... "What new torment do you have planned for
me today?" Jasmine asked hoarsely.
"Serena's discharged for now and staying at the Douglas estate. You're going to take care of her," Daniel commanded, insisting
Jasmine repent to Serena.
With a pounding headache and a feverish, weakened body, Jasmine slumped against the car window.
She didn't have the strength to resist.
"I don't want to work there," Jasmine asserted, not wanting to be associated with The Douglas Family.
edge.
Her fingers clenched tightly as she took a deep breath to contain herself. "What do you want..."
"Take good care of Serena, and I'll pay you ten grand a month. If you do well, I might even sort out schooling for your kid," Daniel
said with a frown, considering how to frame his offer.
He had gone a bit too far the previous night, and this was his way of making amends. For Daniel, ten thousand dollars was
pocket change, and so was facilitating a child's education.
But for Jasmine, that amount was a substantial salary each month.
"Working hours..." Jasmine prompted him to lay it all out.
Daniel felt like she was pushing her luck. "You need to be at The Douglas Family by eight in the morning and then take care of
Serena's three meals a day. You can leave after nine at night, once Serena's asleep. You owe her, Jasmine. I'm giving you a
chance to make it right."
Jasmine took another deep breath, choosing silence over argument.
In Daniel's eyes, Jasmine had stolen twenty years of Serena's life as a wealthy heiress. Looking after her now, as a caregiver,
seemed only fair.
While leaning wearily against the window, Jasmine focused on making it through each day until nine in the evening.
"Daniel..." Her voice was hoarse and filled with unease as she spoke while getting out of the car. "Could I... get an advance on
my salary?"
Justin's school fees weighed heavy on her mind; even ordinary kindergartens charged about ten thousand for just two months of
tuition and living expenses.
A slightly better kindergarten could run over ten grand a month.
Daniel's brow creased, his displeasure showing. "Are you being serious, Jasmine?"
"Get changed and start looking after Miss Serena. We run a tight ship at the Douglas household. No stealing," the nanny warned
as she tossed the servant's uniform at Jasmine with a sneer.
Head bowed, Jasmine remained quiet.
"And one more thing. Master Ethan's coming home today. Keep a low profile; if you upset him, no one can save you," the nanny
pointed straight at Jasmine as she spoke.

Jasmine instinctively stepped back, clutching the few bills in her pocket-the meager sum she had earned from her collected
bottles that she still hadn't managed to pay back to Ethan.
A thousand bucks might not seem a lot to some, but for Jasmine, it was a fortune.
"Ethan's coming back?" Daniel was taken aback. With their father Howard away and Ethan usually keeping his distance from
home, why the sudden frequent visits?
"He said... you're to stay at home and wait for him," the nanny murmured.
A wave of unease washed over Daniel. Ethan never called him directly; he always relayed messages through the nanny, and
being asked to wait at home meant only one thing-Ethan must have caught wind of some blunder of his.
With reluctant defiance, Daniel clenched his fists and stormed into the study, his mind
a whirlpool of anxious thoughts. What could Ethan possibly want? He hadn't slipped up at the company lately.
Could this be about Jordan? Daniel had gone over Ethan's head and reached out directly to Mr. Patrick from SHC Group.
Feeling suffocated by Ethan's domineering presence, Daniel felt the all-too-familiar need to tread on eggshells. In a fit of
frustration, he sent the contents of his desk flying to the floor, each item crashing and echoing his irritation.
Would Ethan loom over him for a lifetime? It seemed as long as Ethan was around, he would never be able to hold his head
high.
In the Douglas family, Ethan was the untouchable idol, free of blemish, nestled securely on his pedestal.
But Daniel refused to believe Ethan was infallible. He silently vowed to seize the moment Ethan slipped he would be there, ready
to topple the idol from his divine perch.
