Chapter 42
"Alright," Harold and Thomas agreed without hesitation.
"But what if we apologize, and she still doesn't accept it?" Michelle asked hesitantly.
"Then, you apologize again! If you were locked in a car and almost burned alive, would a simple 'sorry' from the person responsible make you forgive
them?" Stephen snapped, his tone cold.
Michelle lowered her head, unable to respond.
These past few days, her emotions had been all over the place.
On one hand, she did feel a flicker of guilt. But on the other hand, she kept telling herself it wasn't intentional.
And Demi had been alive this whole time but hadn't reached out, forcing Michelle to endure endless worry and torment.
The thought left her bitter and resentful, stirring a frustrating mix of guilt and anger.
...
The next day, Demi woke up early.
After a quick round of boxing exercises, she grabbed a watering can and stepped outside to tend to her plants.
Just as she was watering them, there was a sharp knock at the door.
"Who is it?" Demi called out, setting down the watering can as she walked toward the front door.
When she opened it, all five members of the Pitt family stood there.
Without a word, Demi slammed the door in their faces. Then, she turned the lock, the click sounding sharp and decisive.
Outside the door, Stephen had just lifted his foot to step forward when the door slammed shut, narrowly missing his nose.
He froze, momentarily stunned.
He took a deep breath and reminded himself that they were in the wrong.
"Demi, open the door so we can talk. I know what happened was their fault, and I've already scolded them on your behalf," Stephen said, keeping his
tone steady as he knocked.
Inside, Demi had been ready to walk away, but something made her reconsider.
Letting the Pitt family stand outside her door, talking loudly for all the neighbors to hear, didn't seem like a good idea. If word got back to Margaret, it
would only make things worse.
After a moment's hesitation, she turned around and opened the door.
Stephen and the others exhaled in unison, visibly relieved.
Without a word, Demi stepped aside and walked back toward the yard.
The five of them entered cautiously. Daniel, who was at the back of the group, thoughtfully closed the door behind him and even locked it.
Demi let out a cold laugh in her mind.
How careful of them. Was it because they didn't want anyone finding out they'd left her to burn in that car while they had run off?
Or were they afraid the truth might come out? That she's the Pitt family's real daughter, while Ana's the fake? And if people found out, would And
completely lose it?
Demi ignored them completely, picked up her watering can, and returned to her flowers.
Stephen gave Michelle a pointed look.
Michelle took a deep breath, forcing a stiff smile as she turned to Demi, who continued watering her flowers.
"Demi, this time... it was my fault. It was a reflex, you know? Things were chaotic, and I forgot you were still in the car."
"Really?" Demi finally looked up, her faint smile razor-sharp as she met Michelle's gaze. "If it were Ana in the car, would you have forgotten?"
Michelle froze, her words dying in her throat.

"No!" Michelle's face went pale. She waved her hands frantically, her voice trembling. "How could we ever want you dead? For you to think like that...
it hurts us!"
"Oh, does it now?" Demi let out a dry laugh, laced with mockery. "So, tell me, what is it you want from me?"
"De... uh, Emi, we came here to ask you to come home with us," Stephen quickly stepped in.
"And why would I go home with you?" Demi tilted her head slightly, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she turned her attention from Stephen to the
flowers she was arranging.
"To work as your housekeeper? Well, you'd better hire someone else. I'm done serving your family."
Stephe opened his mouth to respond but faltered, his words catching in his throat.
"Emi, we were wrong before, you won't have to do the housekeeper's work anymore. Don't you want to be a star? We can pull some strings, support
your career, help you make it big," Daniel interjected.
Demi looked up at him, her lips curling into a cold, mocking smile. She then turned her gaze to Stephen and Michelle.
"What's wrong? Aren't you afraid your fake daughter will throw a tantrum? I'm not going back. What if your precious Ana starts crying and throwing fits
again?
"What if you decide that I should pay the price just to keep her happy? You claim you left me in the car by accident, but who's to say it wasn't on
purpose to keep your fake daughter happy..."
Her eyes swept over the five members of the Pitt family. "What's to say you didn't deliberately leave me in that car to burn alive?"
