Chapter 1986
Chapter 1986
At that moment, everyone had sobered up.
They all knew what kind of man Manfred was.
After exchanging glances, they silently chose to leave. Only Sterling lagged behind.
Just as he reached the door, he grabbed a servant by the collar, his voice dark and low. "What's going on with Manfred? Has he
been like this the past few days?"
Ever since Manfred fell into the water, they hadn't come to see him. No one had hosted any banquets either. Today was their first
time visiting him since the accident.
But today's Manfred felt off.
At first glance, he seemed the same. Yet something was different.
He wasn't indulging in women the way he used to. He was still seeking women, but-
"Ever since Mr. Atkinson fell into the water, he's been different. He's been searching for the woman from the painting. But none of
the women brought to him have satisfied him," the servant answered cautiously.
Sterling narrowed his eyes, deep in thought. But after a brief moment, he let go of the servant and followed the others out.
At the same time, Manfred returned to his chambers.
Without the debauched noise from earlier, his eyes regained some clarity.
Before long, the frightened young woman from before was brought before him once again.
His dark eyes were cold and sharp as he looked at her.
The girl could no longer hold out. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed to the ground, pressing her forehead tightly against the
"Look up." Manfred's voice was icy.
Just like she had done in the hall earlier, the girl slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes. She looked utterly pitiful.
Manfred gave her a glance, then quickly averted his gaze.
Without hesitation, he commanded the servant at the door, "Take her away. Settle her properly."
The word "settle" made it clear-she wouldn't be sent to the serpent pit.
The girl realized that Manfred didn't seem as twisted as the rumors claimed. As she was led away, she couldn't help but steal a
few more glances at him.
Once the door was closed, silence fell over the room again.
Manfred leaned back onto the soft couch. The moment he closed his eyes, a vision surfaced in his mind.
A blurry figure of a young woman standing before him, telling him to take care of himself. This vision had been haunting him for
days.
Sometimes, there were other
images a battlefield engulfed in et

dust and wind. Him, leading
countless soldiers in defense of their homeland.

It felt like an impossible dream. In that dream, everyone called him Mr. Atkinson.
Only that young woman called him Manfred.
This kind of dream had never happened before.
Lately, he had begun to feel that the

actually lived might be the real him.
He even felt disgusted by the very
pit he had built with his own
and by the so-called friends reveled in debauchery with him.
"Who am I?" He furrowed his brows, murmuring to himself.
And then, a sharp pain pierced through his head.
Just then, a servant's voice came from outside the door, "Mr. Atkinson, Mr. Atkinson Sr. wishes to see you."
"Father?" Manfred's eyes snapped open, his response almost instinctive.
"Yes, Mr. Atkinson."
A face surfaced in Manfred's mind-Jayden Atkinson, head of the Atkinson family.
A man who looked just like him and as the leader of the most powerful of the
Three Great Families, Jayden was a true monster.
Publicly, he had only one wife-Manfred's mother.
But in secret? He had been involved with his own sister.
This forced Manfred's mother to shut herself away, chanting every day.
Several children were born from that twisted relationship, and none of them were normal.
Some were autistic and some were physically deformed.
Right now, Manfred felt like a mere bystander, observing memories of his own life.
The previous Manfred never saw Jayden as a monster.
On the contrary, he believed that life should be free of constraints and that people should do whatever made them happy.
