Chapter 35
Chapter 33
Xavier POV
I fling the hospital folder onto my father’s desk without announcing myself, startling him as he stares at me wide–eyed. Xander
walks in behind me, his expression just as grim.
“What is this?” my father stammers, grabbing the file and begining to peruse it while my mother glances at it over his shoulder,
her own eyes questioning.
“Regan’s hospital records for the last few years. All of the abuse he’s suffered and the treatments that have been provided. They
were meant to be scaled and destroyed, but luckily for us, ene of the other doctors kept a copy on their computer at home. Who
do you suppose ordered that Father?” I said sarcastically, glowering at them both.
My mother was busy reading, the blood draining out of her faces she saw the number of fractures, broken bones, and various
other injuries that Regan had endured over the years. My father looked at me and my twin brother in disbelief “Surely it cannot
be true” he began. “There has to be some sort of reason for all of this... he trailed off
“Believe it” I snarled, pinning him with my gaze and refusing to look away from him. “Beta Johnathon has been hiding this from
all of us, for the last few years. I know you don’t like Regan I know the pack doesn’t, but we at least had some sort of duty of care
towards her as a pack member” I shouted, losing control of my temper and exasperated with my parents who continued to ignore
the obvious even when it was right in front of them.
My father’s mouth opened and closed, gaping like a fish. My mother’s voice was strangled. “Boys it’s not that easy to just simply”
She whispered.
“What?” I interrupted her coldly, eyeing her with condemnation. “You are the Luna, it’s your job to protect the children and
mothers in this pack. Did you just figure Regari wasn’t worth it because you blamed her for killing her mother? I can’t condone
this” I gestured to the file sitting on our father’s desk, my throat seizing. “I can’t believe the level you went to ignore
it.”
I was still in a state of disbelief. How bould we have all been so bind for so long?
“I didn’t know” my father’s voice is grim. “Believe me, I have no qualms with Regan. I have never blamed her for her mother’s
death. That was a tragic accident he said perplexed and glancing up at his wife who tightened her lips and avoided.
his gaze.
“Then why are you and Mother so cold towards her? Why have you let the pack abuse her so much? Why haven’t you stopped
it?” I spat out, glowering at them.
“I find it hard to look at her because she is the spitting image of her mother” my father confesses, looking shame–faced, “but I did
not know that I was being so harsh or that I was coming across as cold towards her. I guess I have been lost inside myself and
oblivious to how the pack has been treating her. That’s no excuse” he said tightly “and neither is the relationship we have with
Beta Johnathon preventing us from exploring this now.”
“I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding” my mother tried to protest and all of us stared at her.
Misunderstanding? What was mother trying to play out? She knew this was no simple misunderstanding. This was abuse. The
worst kind. I could see my father regarding her in surprise and even Xander was studying her closely now.
“Abuse is no misunderstanding. Mother, why are you defending Beta johnathon so mich?” I snapped, feeling as though there
was more to this than simply friendship but not sure if I was merely being suspicious.
She blinked. “It’s just that he’s a friend..” she continued to object
“Nonsense Jennifer my father growled, looking frustratedly at her. “If he’s abusing his daughter then it’s our job to step in and
protect Regan. We cannot let friendship stand in the way of doing what is right and what is needed? he told her firmly.

She flushed and bit her lip. “But think about what this will do to Babelle and Heather” she murmured.

1 almost lost it right then and there with her. Where was her comer when it came to Regan, the one who had been abused
Where were her priorities?
“Right now, my priority is Regan, who is my mate,” I told my mother icily, shaking my head at her “I do not give a damn about
Heather and Isabelle
“Heather and Isabelle are equally a part of this. Even if they did not physically harm her, they were just as complicit by not saying
anything” Xander’s voice is deadly quiet “and as such will also warrant punishment” he adds, causing the tension in the room to
grow even thicker as we all look at each other.
My mother looks even more nervous now. My father sighs deeply. “Had I realized this was going on in the pack. I would have
instantly stepped in, but I see now that I have become too lenient in the role of Alpha” he said, looking at us both. “Perhaps
stepping back from the role in the near future will be a good thing. For now, let us discuss this” he said, frowning heavily “Beta
Johnathon, his wife and stepdaughter will be required to explain themselves. It’s only natural that we demand they come here, in
order to confront them before they can make up a false story between themselves.”
1 agreed. The longer we left it, the more chance they had to concoct some fantasy instead of speaking the truth. We could use
the Alpha tone, but that was always a last resort. Although I wasn’t opposed to using it in this instance.
My mother wrings her hands together. “Honey, don’t you think that we are dealing with this too harshly?” I mean, this hardly
needs to be dealt with immediately” she continued to argue persuasively.
We stared at her and she flushed, looking down at the ground, unable to protest any further.
“The sooner the better” I growled, beginning to feel enraged once more. “I don’t trust that man not to run or find some paltry
excuse for his pathetic behavior.”
“If you don’t mind–link him Father, I will” Xander added in agreement, nodding vehemently and side–eyeing our mother warily
Neither of us understood her strange desire to protect Beta Johnathon or why she continued to defend him when the proof
of hurting Regan was right there in front of her.
My father’s eyes grew cloudy as he began to mind–link the Beta and his family. We waited feeling tense, while my mother folded
her arms across her chest and avoided looking at all of us, I felt the rage increasing from my father, though he tried to hide it, his
eyes returning to normal.
“Beta Johnathon is on his way, along with Heather and Isabelle. He is not pleased to have been summoned and even angrier
that I refuse to tell him what the meeting is about. Be warned, he is feeling on edge” he warned my brother and me “and
therefore he will immediately be on the defensive. I am certain that he will be looking to place the blame elsewhere or to find
excuses for Regan’s injuries, that prevent him from being punished. I wish I had seen this side of him sooner” he sighed, shaking
his head and looking weary “but I am grateful for you both bringing this to our attention”
“It is only because we continue to respect you both that we did, I told him, “otherwise Xander and I would have handled this in
our own way and it would not be as merciful as I suspect you and mother are about to be.”
Although I suspected that my father was about to prove me wrong in the best possible way. That is if our mother allowed
him to.
My father laughed. “If you think that I’m about to be merciful simply because he is a friend, then you have a lot to learn about
being an Alpha. Friendships cannot get in the way when it comes to leading the pack, no matter what Your mother understands
that he looked at his ashen wife, and then back at us “and I hope that you never have to feel like this or do this when it comes to
your friends he finished grimly.
There was a loud knocking on the door and my father’s expression hardened while my mother blanched, her anxiety
skyrocketing. I understood her trepidation when it came to pushing a friend, but this was dramatic even for her. We all steeled
ourselves, my father nodding subtly to Xander and me, as the door began to slowly swing open. It was showtime and

Beta Johnathon was about to get a surprise, that he never anticipated coming his way. We were about to show him what
happened to those who hurt our mate and make an example to those who might be trying it in the future. The pack was about to
learn that change was coming its way and it started now
田

Beta Johnathon’s eyes were shilly as he entered the room, along with his wife Heather and his stepelaughter Isabelle, his lips
tightening as my father motioned for him to remain standing where he was, near the doorway.
“What is this about Alpha Jackson?” he asked impatiently, while fought the urge to wrap my hands around his neck and teach
him a lesson for being so disrespectful to our father.
My father regarded him silently for a long thoment. Isabelle looked worried and Heather was trying to catch my mother’s eyes
while she pointedly looked the other way, as though she was ashamed at what was about to happen.
“It’s come to our attention that you have been abusing Regan for the last few years. We have copies of her hospital records.”
My father didn’t bother to mince words. “How could you Johnathon? Your own daughter? Broken bones, fractures, the list goes
on” he roaged in disgust, causing Heather and Isabelle to flinch from the loudness of his voice, while Xander and I shot each
other a triumphant glance.
It was about time our father stood up to Beta Johnathon and showed him who was really in charge.
“It’s all lies” Beta Johnathon tried to say in protest, only for my father to hold up the folder in response, his eyes chilly as he
stared at his old friend and longtime Beta.
“Do I need to use the Alpha tone on you?” my father’s voice was cold. “On Heather, on Isabelle? Did you also hit Regan he
growled, looking at both of the women who began to look increasingly nervous.
“Leave them out of it” Johnathon snarled stepping protectively in front of the women and staring hatefully at our father. “I was the
one who did it. I beat Regan, constantly” he snapped “but she is the reason my mate died all those years ago and I retain the
right to punish her for it, just like all the rest of you have done, no matter how much you stand there pretending you’re not like
me!”
“Punish her? This goes beyond punishment Johnathon,” My father roared, standing up and towering over his so–called friend
who trembled in the face of his wrath. “Regan is not to blame for her mother’s death. It was an accident. A rogue incident.
Nobody could have foreseen it coming he snarled. The patrol were taken completely by surprise that day, as were
we all
“She was never meant to be in that forest” Johnathon snapped bark, seething. “She knew the consequences and she still
entered it. If it weren’t for her, Celeste wouldn’t have died trying to protect her from a rogue attack. Celeste would still be alive
and I would never have had to feel the pain of losing a mate he shouted out, his voice going bleak
“Regan was a child” my father sounded incredulous as he studied Johnathon who looked as though he was beginning to lose it.
“Have you been spreading this throughout the pack so that everybody blamed her?” he asked sickened.
“You made it sound as though it was intentional” I murmured, glancing at Xander and feeling my stomach churn as I realized just
how far the Beta had gone to get his revenge on his daughter. “That she had purposely entered the woods, knowing rogues were
attacking and putting herself and her mother in danger. But it sounds as though Regan didn’t know about the rogues at all. So
which is it, Beta Johnathon?” I asked, leaning forward and spearing him with a gaze, daring him to
tell the truth.
He floundered, “Well, the thing is. Who cares” he cried out in exasperation, causing all of us to look at him stunned. “Either way
she deserves whatever she gets. You loved Celeste, we all did he turned to my mother, spreading his hands out and appealing
to her. “Why else would you have remained silent all these years? You agreed with what I was doing” he sneered, deliberately
raking his gaze over everybody in the room “nobody here objected to it, did they?” he pointed out
Heather looked slightly nauseous, and movement and bring any attention to herself.

on Regan, but I am also to
“We never did discover why Regan went into the woods in the fist place I commented, thinking out loud and watching Beta
Johnathon closely with narrowed eyes. “Regan is always so careful and cautious, it’s hard to fathom why she would put herself in
danger, let alone her mother without cause. Did she ever say why she went into the woods even when it was against your
instructions?” I asked him, curious about the answer he might give.
Was it my imagination or did my mother blanch just now as I asked the question? I wasn’t the only one to see it either. 1
narrowed my eyes. My father looked sharply at my mother his face questioning. She flushed and bit her lip. Even Beta
Johnathon was looking at her now and looking taken aback.
“Mother?” I said, tilting my head and staring at her hard, my voice filled with condemnation.
She looked pleadingly at my father, but something had occurred to him because his tone changed to that of his Alpha tone
instantly before she could attempt to escape the room or make up some sort of fabricated lic.
“Tell us he ordered, and she was forced to obey, tears trailing down her cheeks, her sobs filling the air.
“I’m the reason Regan went into the forest that day. I told her that her mother had gone in there looking for her she whispered,
bowing her head and staring fixedly at the ground
“Why?” my father demanded, looking confused.
Her gaze swung to Beta Johnathon and she looked at him beseechingly. My father used his tone again. She swallowed hard.
“Because I knew the rogues were coming. The patrol had already warned me. I sent Regan into the forest to die” she confessed
shakily, causing everybody in the room to let out a gasp of pure shock
“Why?” my father’s expression was bewildered as he stared at my mother, as though seeing her forthe first time in at different
light.
Why did Beta Johnathon look at my mother with realization dawning on his face?
“She saw us.” The blunt admission caused all of us to still as she stared at Beta Johnathon. “Johnathon and 1. You were away
and I was lonely” she hiccupped, tears continuing to trail down her cheeks. “It was just the one time, I swear, but Regan, she saw
us through the window. I knew it was only a matter of time until she told her mother or you so
“You sent an innocent girl in the forest to die, because you slept with the Beta” I snarled, beyond disgusted with my own mother
in that moment.
She had condemned a little girl to be murdered by rogues to save her own damn hide!
“I know it was wrong, but I couldn’t think what else to do. Your father would have banished me and Johnathon. Celeste went into
the forest after Regan, and it just happened. Regan couldn’t remember who sent her into the forest and eventually, she became
convinced she was the reason for her mother’s death and I just allowed her to believe it” she confessed lowly.
“You killed my mate” Beta Johnathon was staring at my mother, an expression of betrayal on his face “And you almost killed my
daughter just to save your sorry ass?” he roared, suddenly furious and looking on the verge of attacking her as Heather and
labelle took a few steps backward in a hurry.
“To
ave both of us my mother shouted back at him in frustration. “I don’t exactly see you coming clean with my i about what we did”
“Because I thought that there was no point once Celeste was dead Beta Johnathon hissed. “I figured it would only cause more
trouble. You...you” he growled, his eyes going dark as he stared at my mother with menace in his eyes.
“Enough” my father roared, causing everybody to fall silent.

Regan POV
I woke up in the hospital wing, disorientated and unable to remember clearly what had happened My head was throbbing. and
my body ached, my vision was slightly blurred as I blinked and turned my head, disturbed by the sound of machines beeping and
footsteps approaching me from the side of the bed,
“Regan how are you feeling?” the doctor’s voice is cautious as he questions me
1 blink some more, and he comes into focus more clearly. I see that he is holding a clipboard and regarding me sympathetically, I
stretch, wincing as I notice the various bandages and the telltale bruises that continue to litter my body. on the verge of healing
and in various stages of purple and yellow
“Like I got hit by a truck” I rasped, my voice hoarse.
He sighed and shook his head. “You had several broken ribs, bruises, grazes. This isn’t the first time you’ve ended up in hospital
from being beaten” he advised me as I bit my lip and avoided his gaze.
His tone was knowing. I didn’t have to confess to it. Still, I pretended that I didn’t know what he was talking about. It was
humiliating to remember all the times I had found myself in here and the number of times I’d tried to avoid treatments in fear that
they would attempt to speak to my father.
I frowned. “Who brought me here?” I struggled to remember what happened.
“Alpha Xavier and Alpha Xander did. They gave us strict instructions to take good care of you and to ensure that you rested and
recovered” he said disapprovingly, raising a brow at me as I shifted on the bed.
Oh. I had collapsed right in front of the Alpha twins, I remembered embarrassed, after they had started asking questions about
the injuries I had sustained on my body. I flushed and then cleared my throat, glancing around the empty room. The doctor was
the only other person in the room, besides me.
“Where are they?” I asked, slightly disappointed to find none of them had stayed with me and feeling a little hurt.
The doctor hesitated. “Currently they are back at the pack house, dealing with some important he paused “business matters.
Please, remain here until I can inform them you are awake.”
I shook my head and swung my legs around, beginning to tug at the TVs, the doctor grimacing at me in disapproval. “I just want
to go and lie down in a comfortable bed,” I said tightly “And this isn’t as bad as it looks” I assured the doctor, who looked
unconvinced by my story.
Too bad. I really disliked spending time in hospitals and I could remember the comfortable bed that was waiting for me back in
the pack house.
“On the contrary, I think it’s extremely bad and the Alpha twins agree with me. Your body cannot continue to sustain these types
of injuries. Please stay” he argued but I was stubbornly shaking my head.
“I will rest better in a normal bed,” I told him flatly.
If Xavier or Xander had wanted me to stay here then they should have stayed with me, instead of leaving instructions.
I couldn’t afford to remain here in case my father or Isabelle found me. I would be vulnerable without the Alpha twins beside me
and I was too injured to be able to defend myself. Getting back to the pack house was my number one priority. I half smiled,
thinking that the Alpha twins would be pleased to find me awake and thinking it would be nice to surprise them, even if they got
angry at me for ignoring their request to remain where I was.

“Please, find me some scrubs or something I requested, frowning down at the hospital gown I was wearing and hoping that the
Alpha twins hadn’t changed my clothes.
I blushed just thinking about it.
“I really must insist the doctor continued, and I glanced up at him sharply.
“I will discharge myself against medical advice. That will ensure you are not liable for anything that happens to me. Bur either
way, I am leaving this hospital one way or another I told him firmly as he stood there flabbergasted, not accustomed to his
patients refusing him.
“Very well,” he said stiffly, bowing his head, “If you are that insistent, then I will get the discharge papers and some scrubs for you
to wear back to the pack house he finished grimly.
A few minutes later I was dressed and free to go. I carefully walked out of the hospital, wincing at the pain in my sides, which
was a lot better than it had been when I collapsed. They were on the mend. I walked stiffly, making my way across the grounds,
careful to keep my head bowed down low. I didn’t have the luxury of mind–linking the twins and part of me suspected the dector
might be angry enough to inform them I was coming, so I was hastening as fast as my body would possibly allow me to. To my
great surprise, I made it to the pack house without incident, causing me to pause and glance around suspiciously. I had half
expected either Xander or Xavier to meet me, but there was no sign of them. I shrugged and carefully walked inside, wondering
where to go. Something came over me, some unknown instinct, and instead of heading upstairs, I began to make my way
towards the back of the house, where the Alpha’s study was located. The doctor had said they were taking care of pack
business, and there was a likelihood they were doing some work with their father, I surmised, inching closer, only to hear
everything that was said inside, causing me to still in shock and horror.
“You are the reason that my mother died” I repeated, staring with hatred at Luna Jennifer as she blinked and wrung her hands
together. “You sent me into the forest that day, even after you knew that I was never allowed to play in there. You told me that my
mother was already inside. I trusted you” I breathed, feeling sick to my stomach as everybody looked at me, including the Alpha
with apologetic looks “You were her best friend and like an aunt to me. I never would have thought you were capable of such a
thing.”
“Regan” Luna Jennifer tried to plead, her lower lip quivering “please, forgive me. I didn’t mean
for...”
“Forgive you?” my tone is incredulous and I’m standing there, in a state of disbelief, my head almost spinning “You murdered my
mother, you bitch” I shouted, unable to control myself any longer. “For as long as I live, I will hate you. You condemned me to a
lifetime of beatings and to being mistreated by the pack. My own father hates me, just like I hate him for cheating on her” I cast
scathing eyes on my remarkably silent father.
“Regan they will be punished” Alpha Jackson tried to say but I gave a bitter laugh, my mates staring at me wide–eyed.
“There is no punishment big enough for what she did. What they did” I gestured at Luna Jennifer and my father “and punishing
them is not going to bring my mother back or give me back the years of my life spent in utter misery.”
It would never give me back what I had lost, or any semblance of it. My lip twitched.
He flinched. I looked at my mates who had remained silent until now.
“Did you know?” I could barely breathe as I waited for them to answer me.
Did they know about their mother’s treachery? Her betrayal? Had they helped her to cover it up? Xander and Xavier shook their
heads at me, but when they moved towards me, I put up a band.
“Save it. I can’t believe I let you persuade me to give you both a chance. Look at you” My lip twisted and my eyes flashed as I
stared at Luna Jennifer, Alpha Jackson, the twins, and then over at my father. “This whole family is just fucked up,” I said bitterly
“and no manner of excuses or apologies is ever going to want me to become mates with the very family who murdered my
mother” I screamed.
“Regan

spinning on my heel.
My father had said nothing. Heather and Isabelle Isad avoided my gaze. I stormed up the stairs, beginning to feel tears
bedroom this trailing down my cheeks. Pain ricocheted through my heart. I was careful to close and lock the door to my time,
before sinking down to my knees and openly sobbing with my arms wrapped around myself. For the first time. I had answers, but
I wished that I had remained oblivious to it all. My heart was breaking all over again and this time I didn’t think I would be able to
heal it. The urge to flee, to leave this pack, regardless of the consequences had never been stronger than it was at this moment.
at that moment.
Heather was crying silently and even Isabelle was looking incredulous as she stared between the Luna and her father. She had
not been privy to any of this information.
“I’m too close to all of this.” My father was panting heavily as he turned to regard the two of us. “I can’t oversee the punishments,
because my wife is also responsible in part for Regan’s abuse and for the death of a pack member. I’m sorry sons. But you’ll
have to step in this time” he rubbed his face, looking tired and filled with grief. “I can’t even bear to look at you right now” he
growled at our mother who sobbed harder and looked as though she was about to fling herself at him and beg for mercy.
A voice from the doorway had all of us stiffening while I felt dread rise inside of me. “You sent me into the forest that day and are
the reason my mother was killed?”
Regan stood in the doorway, pale, shaking, her mouth parted in shock, her whole body trembling as she stared at every single
one of us, looking haunted. She had heard every single word that had been spoken just now. How long had she been standing
outside in the hallway, eavesdropping as we argued and accused each other? Right now she looked as though she was about to
collapse as she regarded our mother and her father with nothing but pure hatred in her eyes. Things were about to get a lot more
painful as Regan finally discovered who was responsible for everything she had suffered for the last few years, with her own
mate’s family being responsible for it all.
