Whitney was completely baffled-she honestly couldn't make sense of this guy's bizarre anatomy.

"If Dr. Valentine can't explain it, then I'm even more clueless," Ludwik teased, his gaze lingering on her with a lazy curve to his lips. He lowered his voice, the tone a deep, playful rumble. "But you felt it, right? Kinda dangerous, huh?"

The cocky, devil-may-care look on his face made Whitney bite her lip, at a loss for words.

The threat she'd felt at her fingertips had been way too intense, and now she was overheating. All she wanted was to shake him off.

But Ludwik, playing the wounded puppy, grabbed her hand again, putting on an exaggeratedly pitiful face. "Take it easy on me, Whitney. Look, it's been pining for you, barely hanging in there. If you go full Hulk-smash on it, my future happiness will be toast."

And with that, this grown man actually bit his lip, looking like the world's most miserable victim.

Whitney could've just slammed her head into a block of cheddar out of sheer exasperation. Her breath hitched, cheeks flushed. "So what do you want me to do?!"

He gave her a wicked, lazy grin, lounging back against the pillows like he owned the place, somehow managing to look both seriously concerned and shameless at once. "You're the expert. Interact a little, check if things are really getting better." "Interact, my foot!"

Of course Whitney caught on to exactly what his not-so-innocent suggestion meant. He actually wanted her to...

Come on. The guy was barely alive, two days post-op. Did he really expect- No way she was giving in to his nonsense, not for a second. Never mind an examination; she doubted he could even handle it.

And honestly? She had zero interest in giving him the satisfaction.

So, stubborn as ever, Whitney yanked her hand free without a care for his obvious disappointment, and mustered her fiercest doctor-voice. "Ahem. Knock it off with the nonsense. You're half-dead right now. Does it even matter if you're 'working' or not?"

"How does it not matter? That's my entire lifelong happiness guarantee right there!" Ludwik shot back, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Whitney felt her face go up in flames. She glared. "Why do you care about my happiness? Who said you were part of my future? Look at the state you're in-l wouldn't touch you with a ten-foot pole!"

"You're rejecting me? Most people barely survive this surgery, and I'm already bouncing back faster than anyone. Dr. Horatio said I'm built like a linebacker. And now my 'condition' is fixed, so I'm more than good enough for you. Whitney,,

listen don't get too cocky. A good man's in high demand, you know Plus, we have a daughter together. She's still a baby. Are you really gonna ditch us both?"

The mention of their little girl made Whitney roll her eyes at him. "Oh, please. You talk about our daughter as if you're some model dad! She's still in the ICU and here you are flirting. So what, you dump at the parenting on me? Ludwik, you have no shame."

"Yeah, right! If I'd been soft-hearted for even a second, you'd have gotten exactly

Ludwik's expression darkened, and he looked at her with mock despair. "You know it's been so long, I've almost forgotten what pleasure feels like." The content is on

"Serves you right." Whitney rolled her eyes, standing up with zero sympathy.

"Don't even dream about using me for practice."

Face burning, she pivoted toward the door. "I'll go call in a urologist. And then

check on our daughter."
