Chapter 1028
Chapter 1028
Their eyes met-Evadne's were rimmed red, her hazel gaze filling with tears, equal parts heartbreak and hope.
Thaddeus had come out to see her. Did this mean he knew she'd been watching over him all along?
Maybe, deep down, he still cared. Maybe she still meant something special to him.
Evadne's lips parted, soft and trembling. Her nose was pink from crying, and she lay there on the floor, looking up at him with a voice so small and wounded it made her sound almost childlike.
"Thaddeus... Thaddeus..."
He stared down at her, his blue eyes dark and unreadable. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then his gravelly voice broke the silence.
"Why are you still here?"
A fat tear slipped down Evadne's cheek, fragile as glass.
She wanted to speak, but all that came out was a broken sob.
Thaddeus frowned, eyeing her tear-streaked face with growing impatience.
"You keep talking. You woke me up."
"I'm... I'm sorry..." she hiccuped, apologizing through her tears.
She used to be so proud, so untouchable. Around him, though, she'd always been
a little reckless, wild even. Now she was careful-so careful it was almost painful to watch.
He could see she'd fallen and couldn't get up. Letting her lie there on the cold floor wasn't right, even if he didn't feel anything for her anymore. He wasn't heartless.
Even if he'd forgotten just how kind he used to be, how hopelessly devoted he'd once been to this woman.
He bent down and scooped her up, cradling her against him.
"Don't-!" Evadne gasped, remembering the wound in his left shoulder, barely healed. He shouldn't be lifting her like this.
"What, you wanna spend the night on the floor? he shot back, ignoring the pain that flared down his arm. Carrying her into the hospital room, he added, "You might want to stay there, but I need to sleep. I've never met a woman who's as loud as you are when she's trying to fest."
He'd always been blunt, never sugarcoating a thing. Losing his emotions had only
made him more brutally honest.
When they'd first gotten married, his
sharp tongue had left her fuming more often than not. She'd always swallowed her pride, scared of making him angry.
But she wasn't the same llana Waverley she used to be.
Summoning her courage, Evadne looped her arms around his neck, her big hazel eyes soft and teasing.
"Well, Mr. Thaddeus, sounds like you've watched a lot of women sleep."
"Never," he snapped, not meeting her gaze. "But I'd bet none of them were this noisy."
Ouch.

Finally, he laid her gently on the hospital bed.
"Let go," he said, his voice cool.
She was still clinging to his neck, so he had to sit on the edge of the bed,
hunched
over awkwardly, his tall frame cramped and uncomfortable.
After days of keeping her feelings bottled up, Evadne couldn't hold back any
longer.
Besides, Ms. Evadne had never been the type to back down.
