Chapter 44
Chapter 44
Allison furrowed her brow.
“Nope.”
Shawn’s voice was tinged with awkwardness. “Can we please stop fighting? I’ve missed you a lot these past few days. I was out of line that day; I
shouldn’t have said those things.”
“It doesn’t matter now. We’re already broken up, so none of it matters anymore,” Allison replied, her voice cool and detached.
“Broken up?” Shawn’s tone turned icy. “I didn’t agree to that.”
“A breakup isn’t a divorce; I don’t need your approval.” Allison’s demeanor was firm and unyielding. “Shawn, don’t contact me again.”
With that, she hung up and blocked his number.
Allison shifted her focus to her career. She was determined to make something of herself.
While opening her own law firm was an option, she knew she didn’t have much of a reputation in the field yet, and establishing a name would be
challenging.
Allison decided to gain experience and build her reputation at a well–known firm first. Once she’d made a name for herself, she could branch out on
her own.
“Allie, you’re is so talented. You’ll definitely make waves in Oak Lake. Why not start with Summit & Vale Solicitors? It’s the top firm in Oak Lake right
now.”
After considering it, Allison nodded. “Alright, I’ll send in my resume.”
Meanwhile, Shawn listened to the dial tone, feeling hollow inside.
How could Allison be so heartless, and end things just like that, without a trace of remorse?
He lay on the bed where Allison used to sleep, inhaling the faint scent she left behind.
Burying his face in the pillow, he pictured Allison’s face and sighed deeply. “Allison, I miss you.”
So much...
Just then, Kate walked in. “Shawn, dinner’s ready.”
Shawn pulled Kate close, pinning her beneath him.
The tension in the air was electric, ready to spark.
In the heat of the moment, Shawn, lost in a daze, called out, “Allie, my Allie. I miss you so much...”
Kate suddenly froze under him, her face drained of color.
The next day, Sabrina threw a little get–together to celebrate Allison’s return to Oak Lake.
In the bar, three friends sat in a booth, sipping drinks and chatting.
“I don’t think that Lillian is someone to be underestimated,” Sabrina remarked, downing her drink and turning to Allison. “The way she treated you
yesterday was infuriating.”
Sabrina scoffed. “Please, what kind of sister–in–law is she? She’s the Fisher family’s maid’s daughter, at best a foster child, at worst just an orphan
living on someone else’s dime. She really thinks she’s some kind of

princess?”
Allison knew the Fisher family had a foster daughter but hadn’t realized she was the maid’s child.
Surprised, she asked, “Why would the Fisher family adopt the maid’s daughter?”

Olivia explained, “According to my brother, years ago, Rose was attacked, and the maid took a knife for her, saving her life. On her deathbed, the
maid made Rose promise something.”
Here, Olivia paused, giving Allison a meaningful look.
Allison blinked, prompting her, “Why’d you stop?”
Olivia continued, “Do you know what the maid asked Rose to promise on her deathbed?”
