One careless word could cost someone their life, and Quinlyn pursed her lips, choosing to say slaan.
Jason knew the situation and managed to extract a lot of information
Heavy rainfall in recent years caused landslides and mudslides, and the tors as has killed many Children fell 11, mut doctors
advised a change of environment.
“What kind of environment? It just means they want us to buy a house! Where’s the money? Our family has led here for
generations without problems. Why can’t the kids live here too? Such nonsense? Every shh, working foxey then wess to prepare
dinner.
The meal was simple,
A plate of vegetables and a bowl of pickled chili peppers with a few slices of smoked meat moved in
Before eating, Jason shot Quinlyn a look, silently asking if the food was safe.
“It’s fine; you can eat it.”
He felt relieved but after just a few bites, the spiciness made him yelp.
When Everly saw him, she laughed. “It’s hot, but in this humid place, spicy food can drive out the cold and damp. You book
weak; eat more so you don’t get sick.”
“Gentle” Jason felt defeated, almost rolling on the floor in agony and had to rush to the bathroom
Quinlyn enjoyed it with the rice, having several bowls. While cleaning up, she saw Everly squatting under a big tree througho the
window.
She cracked the window slightly and could faintly hear some mumbling
“Please, gods, let me get pregnant soon. I’ve prepared the offerings. Once I have a child, everything will be good, my husband
will come home, and I’ll have a baby bump soon.”
This strange prayer sounded eerie in the darkness, as if the sleeping mountains might hear and grant her wishes.
Yet, Quinlyn knew better; climate change caused all the rain, which washed away vegetation, making the soil weak–hence
frequent mudslides and landslides.
Everly, with thinning hair and dark circles under her eyes, clearly was also suffering from toxins; it made sense she couldn’t get
pregnant.
But poverty and ignorance made her dismiss the doctor’s advice, hoping for divine intervention, even offering up other kids as
The water flowed silently through her fingers.
As Everly entered, she hurriedly grabbed the dishes from Quinlyn’s hands. “You shouldn’t have to wash up. You paid, but you’re
so understanding, coming out here with your dad for adventures. You can take hardships better than that sickly kid next door.”
Quinlyn felt her lips tighten even more.
Just as Jason emerged from the bathroom, he jumped in surprise. “What are you doing standing here?”
“I feel uncomfortable,” Quinlyn said with a serious face, trying to express her feelings. “I don’t want that child to serve the

mountain god; I want to save her.”
Jason thought to himself, ‘Ugh, does she think I’m a magic genie or something? But gazing into her dark eyes made it hard for
him to refuse. He had taught her to be open–hearted; he couldn’t discourage her on the first try.
“Okay, I’ll help you think of a plan, alright?”
“Yeah.” Quinlyn finally smiled, her steps feeling lighter.
Inside, they brainstormed. Jason figured, since the mountain god “existed,” he might as well make it show up and stop the
sacrifices.
“Why eat this? We should ask them to offer bird’s nest and shark fin to mountain god. I don’t believe these people wouldn’t go
out and find jobs.” When it comes to lousy suggestions, no one could beat a scammer.
Early the next morning, Jason went door–to–door delivering money under the guise of a message from the mountain god in a
dream.
“I’m not kidding. We were in the mountains and got caught in this huge fog and nearly died. In that moment, I felt a light guiding
me, leading me this way. How else could I, a city guy, guide a kid through the mountains?”
Quinlyn thought, ‘If I remember it right, the guiding light is me.’
But with Jason’s smooth talk, many villagers believed him since the free money felt very real; it was surely a gift from their
mountain god.
“We need to hurry and make sacrifices. Let’s not wait any longer.” They began to discuss finding the village chief.
Jason chimed in. “Right. The offerings should be taken to wherever I saw the gods; maybe they’ll sense our sincerity more
there.”
But Jason managed to convince them while entering the chief’s home, bouncing around with his charisma. If Quinlyn. hadn’t
come out of the forest with him, they might have believed he stumbled upon a ghost.
As they walked back, Quinlyn asked curiously, “How will you convince them?”
“Tell them the mountain god is angry and unhappy with the offerings.” Jason revealed a creepy grin. “I’ll just burn the mountain
down.” Forget the gods and ghosts, he wanted them all gone.
Quinlyn wondered, ‘Would that mean more ghosts?‘
However, once Glenn made up his mind, he would go his own way. In just two days, he had coordinated with all parties and set a
time to enter the mountain. Yet once Jason set his mind, he pushed forward; in just two days, he coordinated everything and set
the time for the mountain trip.
The night before, he had Quinlyn scout the area, where she prepared the dry grass and poured oil. With a lantern in hand, she
watched him hustle, checking the humidity in the air, and picked some mushrooms nearby.
On the fifteenth day, the young men went to town to buy various fruits and meats, as well as candles. The villagers pooled their
resources to bring back a full cart, wrapped in red silk to offer to the mountain god.
As night fell, they heard a chilling scream from the place where they stayed before. “No, my child!”
Quinlyn, holding a bowl, saw Ken come out with a child and place her in the cart with the offerings.
It was a little girl around six or seven, dressed in white pajamas, tied up with red strings, her mouth was covered with a red cloth,
her lips blackened.

It’s just one kid; there’ll be more. Do you want to doom the whole family?” he whispered fiercely near his wife.
Everly struggled helplessly, crying in despair. “That child is a piece of my heart, not just a thing, how could I not hurt? she
thought.
“Enough! Stop mourning, it’s bad luck! We need to head out. I still have offerings to the mountain god to make Emily’s sarcastic
voice came from behind Quinlyn.
Dressed devoutly, Emily faced the mountains with her hands clasped, as if already praying to the divine.
Quinlyn gripped her chopsticks, feeling for a moment that burning it all down might actually be a better option.
