“Wah, Dad, Mom!” The boy cried, gasping for breath, unable to hear anything
Nearby, someone noticed the commotion and was calling the police shoulder.

But Jason showed no intention of leaving; he stood behind Quinlyn, grinning and saying, “I declare this kid ran into my chubby
friend. You owe an apology and a thousand bucks, starting now! One, two...”
“We’ll pay, we’ll pay. The parents scrambled up, pulling their son to apologize repeatedly.
“Are you satisfied now?” Jason didn’t even look at them but patted Quinlyn’s shoulder.
She glanced up at him, noticing the anger had faded from his eyes, and nodded. ‘It wasn’t a big deal, really, she thought.
Only when the sound of sirens echoed in the distance did Jason take Quinlyn away, casually grabbing a phone on the way
out.
“People don’t carry cash anymore; that’s a bit of a problem,” he explained, expertly avoiding the police as he turned down an
alley. In a blind spot of the cameras, he transferred the thousand bucks somewhere and tossed the phone out the window.
That phone was the latest model, worth a grand; the car crushed it, shattering the screen instantly.
On the way, Jason’s stomach acted up. After buying some medicine, he felt miserable, the heavy smell of chili making him
sneeze.
“This place isn’t fun anymore. I’m out, never coming back. Hey, Quinlyn, I can’t drive. You take the wheel,” he said, pulling her
over without giving her a choice.
They switched places, and Quinlyn touched the steering wheel hesitantly. “I don’t have a license. She worried, following
Stanley’s advice against driving without one.

“No worries. You’re my hostage; you have to listen.” Jason waved his hand, looking worn out as he slumped in his seat.
“I’ll teach you. Just focus ahead and press the right pedal. Let’s go!”
The car slowly rolled forward down the main road.
Quinlyn had driven manual before; this felt easier. Gradually, she found it fun and began to speed up.
“The left pedal is the brake; just don’t go too fast at intersections. See? You’re getting it..
Jason cranked up the car’s music, punk rock blaring through winter streets, lifting everyone’s spirits. He couldn’t help but sway
along.

He watched Quinlyn smiling, bobbing her head in rhythm, and reached out to touch her fluffy hat.
“Feeling happy now?” he asked.
Quinlyn looked at him. “I wasn’t unhappy.”
“That’s a lie. When that chubby kid said you had no parents, you totally deflected.“Quinlyn went quiet; he noticed everything.
“Yeah, it’s uncomfortable, but it’s just a bit,” she admitted, having mostly forgotten about it. Jason squeezed the bunny ears on
her hat, growing serious.
“Why ignore your feelings? You had a tough time, couldn’t speak your truth, so you subconsciously choose to forget. Does

Quinlyn stared ahead, momentarily confused; no one had asked her that before, but it felt accurate,

When she was little and hungry, she’d cry, but Edward struggled so much. He’d carry her door to door, often receiving, nasty
words for no food by the end of the day..
After he was gone, she cried, but no one listened, so she stopped crying.
“Crying doesn’t solve problems,” she explained quietly.
“So what? Shouting is better than bottling it up. Or just take action. If someone wrongs you, make sure their parents don’t
recognize them.”
Jason let go of her hat, turning to pinch her cheek lightly. “Never let yourself be bullied, and speak up if you’re unhappy, got it?”
Quinlyn winced a little but managed a soft ‘yeah.
“Now that’s more like it,” Jason said, satisfied, leaning back comfortably. Just as he fished out a cigarette and lit it, a tiny voice
piped up beside him.
“Don’t smoke. The smell is awful.”
Jason froze, speechless.
Quinlyn turned and winked at him, reminding him that expressing how you feel is important.
Jason just sighed and closed his eyes, realizing he was forced to quit smoking.
The mountain roads ahead were narrow, but they widened after a while.
As Quinlyn listened to the music and took in the scenery, she felt relaxed, only to be jolted when they hit a pothole and blew a

tire.
“Whoa! What’s happening, an earthquake?” Jason was jolted awake, still dazed.
Quinlyn hit the brakes, carefully steering the car to the side of the road. Once the handbrake was engaged, they got out to
check.
“Who put nails in the road? What a jerk!” They spotted several nails still upright, making Jason curse loudly.
:

As Quinlyn bent down to clear the nails, a group of people suddenly rushed out from the roadside.
“Don’t touch our stuff!”
Quinlyn stood up quickly, realizing the group wore unusual outfits and wielded sickles and hoes, eyeing them menacingly.
Jason hurried over, pulling her back. “You okay?”
Quinlyn shook her head. “They put the spikes down.”
Jason frowned, glaring at the locals. “You put these down to rob us?” When they nodded, he instantly pulled out his gun.
But an older man stepped forward confidently. “You’ve been chosen; blame your bad luck. Only when the nails disappear can our
village rid itself of bad fortune.”
Quinlyn blinked, not understanding a word.

He spoke up, “We’re stranded in the middle of nowhere; our car is broken. Let us leave, or you’re sending us to our deaths”
“At least tell us where to go nearby.” He suddenly softened, no longer anger–driven.
The old man looked down at him, disdainful. “You can’t enter our village. Keep following the road, another village lies over the
next mountain. Hurry!”
Jason turned and walked away without needing them to push him out.
Quinlyn glanced back at the villagers, then quickly followed. “Can’t you take them on?”

She wondered, ‘No way, he had taken down those guys at the hot pot place alone!
Jason adjusted Quinlyn’s hat, leading her up the mountainside on a narrow path. “These ethnic groups live deep in the
mountains and have unique rituals. When conflicts arise, they can become dangerous, best to stay away?
‘More rituals,’ Quinlyn frowned, unable to understand.
