When Cher and her husband arrived, the yard was already bustling with people. Adults were sipping tea under the eaves while
teenagers lit fireworks, arranging them in patterns.
“Devin, you fool! Stacking them so high will blow you up!”
“It won’t, Stanley. Trust me, it’ll look amazing.”
“If you set my house on fire, I’ll move in with you tomorrow!”
“C’mon, nerd! I won’t do it again. Hey, Stanley, why did you kick me?”
“Because you listened to him and disobeyed me. You deserve a beating!”
A rowdy group of teens was filled with energy, building a long chain of fireworks. They ever tried to make Quinlyn the center of
attention but got stopped by Larry.
“Let Quinlyn lead; she might create a cool pattern in the sky,” Cher remarked.
Elowyn happily handed her tea, saying, “Kids just want to have fun. Quinlyn usually behaves and loves spending time with her
brothers.”
“Unlike you, who was so serious as a child, you didn’t play with others; I had to be shameless to be your friend.”
Cher paused for a moment, lost in memories from long ago, which she tried to forget.
“Yeah, I should thank you, Elowyn. With you around, my childhood wasn’t so lonely,” she said, holding her cup and watching the
lights reflect in the water, feeling a warmth.
“It’s cold now; you drink this,” Zane said as he reached over to switch her tea, then held her fingers briefly and took out some
gloves for her to wear.
Seeing them being affectionate, Elowyn chuckled. “If you two had kids, you’d be all mushy every day.”

Cher smiled but instinctively placed a hand on her belly.
At 11 PM, the fireworks burst in a stunning array of colors, lighting up the night sky as neighbors peeked out to see it was the
Wilson family celebrating.
Elowyn was friendly and had great ties with everyone.

Zane held his wife, watching her get lost in thought in the yard, then said, “Let’s move here after the New Year.”

Now nobody called him a murderer; people weren’t avoiding him anymore. He just didn’t want Cher to always feel isolated by
sticking with him.
Cher leaned against his chest, her pale face glowing in the fireworks‘ colorful light, making her even more beautiful, but she
didn’t respond.
When the clock struck midnight, fireworks lit up again, and everyone began to wish each other well.
“Happy New Year!”
“Out with the old, in with the new, Happy New Year!”
Quinlyn and Mandy wore new clothes and matching little hair buns, looking like two adorable fairy girls as they greeted the
adults around.

“Grandpa Edward, wishing you health, longevity, and happiness this New Year!”
“Good girl! Here’s a big red envelope for you both!“Edward laughed.

Mandy was sweet and charming, saying auspicious phrases to everyone, making everyone laugh heartily.

It has been many years since Quinlyn celebrated New Year’s with others; she couldn’t think of much to say and just followed
Mandy, bowing seriously and saying, “Happy New Year!”
The adults patted her head, complimenting her for being a good kid, with joy shining in their eyes.
Cher had prepared red envelopes too. When she handed one to Quinlyn, she playfully pinched her cheek, “I can see you really
love it here; you won’t learn painting with me now.”
She hadn’t had those thoughts before; she misunderstood that Elowyn wanted her to keep Quinlyn. Initially, she didn’t care, but
after realizing how great it was, she understood it was a mix–up.
“Cher, Elowyn said you could move here,” Quinlyn remarked, looking up with her little face to remind her of other options.
Cher smiled but changed the subject. “Today, I received a notice from Jelasica. Quinlyn, I’m going to be a judge again, standing
at the top.”
She had stepped down due to Zane’s case, but with rising public support, she was back in a high position. This meant that even
if they moved there, she’d have to work in Brynton soon. She said,”If you ever get into trouble, I can help you.”

Thank goodness Elowyn didn’t hear that; she would’ve scolded her right there. It was Christmas–so unlucky! But more
unfortunate was that on the first day of the new year, Quinlyn needed to visit the cemetery.
“Can’t you go another time? It’s raining outside,” Joseph said, surprised to see her when he woke early.
Quinlyn, still in her new outfit, shook her head. “I want to go now.”
Seeing her insist, Joseph sighed. “Then I’ll go with you; change your clothes first. Wearing all red to a gravesite is a bit too
casual.”
“Okay.” Quinlyn obediently went to change.

The sky was gray, and fine rain fell. The cemetery was eerily silent, with gray tombstones standing quietly in the rain, looking like
a faded painting.
When the wind blew, the cold air seeped down into their bones.
Joseph held the umbrella over Quinlyn, wrapping an arm around her to shield her from the rain. They climbed the steps slowly,
until they saw two figures in the distance.
In this weather and at this time, someone else was there like them. Joseph frowned slightly, suspecting he might know them, and
it seemed like Quinlyn was coming specifically to find them.
Sure enough, when they got closer, they recognized it was Cher and Zane. Cher had just placed a bouq. and there was still a bit
of rainwater on her fingertip as she pulled her hand back.

When she heard their footsteps, she seemed unsurprised and turned to Quinlyn with a smile. “How did you find out?” Joseph
noticed they were honoring two tombstones with lilies, both featuring women in their photos.
One was from ten years ago, and the other from over thirty years, showing a significant time gap. Yet he immediately recognized
these two were Cher and Zane’s mothers.
He had heard from his mother that Zane’s biological mother died young, beaten to death by his father, while Cher was

luckier; her father died early, leaving her mother to raise her until she passed away ten years ago, aligning perfectly with the
timelines.
But this cemetery was expensive, one of the older ones with no space left. Zane couldn’t afford it decades ago, and ten years
ago, Mrs. Richardson from the Richardson family couldn’t either, so they must have known each other long before.
Under the black umbrella, Quinlyn stepped through droplets and edxplained to Cher calmly. “On the first night of sleep while
reading picture books, one book’s last page had two people, and the heart drawn looked like the clay cup Zane made”

That cup was a gift from Zane to Cher, and every time she drank water, she could see it.
Cher was taken aback by Quinlyn’s words. She thought she had revealed it later but didn’t realize Quinlyn had figured it out from
the very first day.
Cher smiled, “You’re really smart, Quinlyn. Yes, Zane and I are childhood friends; we’ve been neighbors since we were little!
