Chapter 839
The intruder, having achieved his goal, didn't linger any longer.
As he left, he threw out a chilling warning, "This time, I’ll take Evangeline’s life. In a few days, I'll come back for yours!"
With that, he leaped out of the window just as the guards arrived.
Under these circumstances, Suzy couldn’t chase after him.
Evangeline's condition was critical.
Suzy quickly carried Evangeline to the bed and began examining her.
The bullet had struck her abdomen, leaving the child beyond saving and putting her life in danger.
"Evangeline, you have to hold on!" Suzy urged, her voice filled with desperation as she tried to encourage Evangeline to stay conscious.
"Suzy..." Evangeline’s breath was faint.
"I... I don't think I’ll make it. Don’t waste your energy. I’m afraid I won’t get to see your brother again... He’s still away... I wish I could..."
"No, you will see him! I promise you will!"
Suzy gripped Evangeline’s hand tightly. "You have to hold on. You miss him, and he misses you too. You're the most important person in his life, so
"I want to wait for him... but..." Evangeline's breathing grew more labored.
"I’m... useless. I couldn't even protect my own child... And now, I'm scared... scared of facing him when he finds out. What if he's disappointed in
me?"
"You’re overthinking it! My brother would never be disappointed in you. If anyone should feel guilty, it’s me.
“I didn’t protect you like I should have. I came here to help, but instead—"
Suzy’s brows furrowed deeply, frustration and confusion overtaking her thoughts.
She didn’t understand. How had everything gone so wrong?
Where had the guards been? Shouldn't they have arrived the moment the commotion started?
But instead, they'd only shown up after the attacker had left. What had gone wrong?
A violent cough from Evangeline broke Suzy's train of thought.
Blood speckled Evangeline's lips, and her body convulsed with each breath.
Suzy immediately applied pressure to the wound and used a medical needle technique to stop the bleeding.
Fortunately, the bleeding slowed, and she managed to remove the bullet.
Without hesitation, Suzy gave her a Life-Sustaining Pill and tucked her in to rest.
Shortly after swallowing the pill, Evangeline drifted into sleep.
In her slumber, her vitals gradually stabilized.
The situation was dire, but at least Suzy managed to save her life.
However, the child...
In truth, Evangeline had lost more than just the child.
She had also lost the ability to ever become a mother again.
The bullet had damaged her uterus, and unless a miracle occurred, she would never have another child.
Suzy had no idea how she would break this news to her brother when he returned.
And Evangeline... she was already devastated.
If she found out she’d lost her ability to have children, it would be unbearable.
After all, what woman could accept something like this?
With a heavy sigh, Suzy left the room.
She approached the maid who had been attending to Evangeline—the same one who had shouted for help when the attack happened.
"Why did the guards take so long to arrive?"
The maid looked nervous. "I... I don’t know. I swear I sent someone to call them right away.
“I was shouting so loudly too. They should’ve heard me even without the messenger. But for some reason, they still came so late. I find it strange
too."
