Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts

Chapter 530

Phoebe felt a weight lift off her shoulders after pouring out her worries to her parents. That night, she slept like a log, without a single dream to stir her rest.

The next morning, she woke up feeling more refreshed than usual, humming a tune as she prepared a breakfast of a hot buttered corn on the cob, a sunny-side-up egg, and poured herself a glass of milk. After breakfast, she put on her makeup with extra care, feeling pretty and poised for the day ahead.

Work seemed easier that day, and she powered through her tasks with a newfound vigor, finishing up well ahead of schedule. Her plans for lunchtime were to visit her best friend's husband, the legendary tycoon of Meyer Group in A City.

But luck wasn't on her side. She bumped into her blind date from the previous evening, Noel, and to make matters worse, he was the same guy she'd impulsively kissed years ago during a game. He'd also caught her having a teary moment in the men's restroom once.

Her heart was still racing as she got back into her car. Could her luck get any worse? Visiting Ethan was out of the question now, so she shot a text to her friend Ines and drove off.

She hadn't been on the road long when her phone buzzed in her purse. Glancing at the screen, she saw an unknown number and connected her Bluetooth headset. "Hello, this is Phoebe."

A deep voice came through, "Phoebe, why the rush? What do you think about my proposal from earlier?"

Phoebe frowned. This guy again! Noel was like a bad penny- always turning up. And how had he gotten her number so quickly? Did he have her investigated? What a despicable man!

"Noel, what proposal are you talking about?"

"You stole my first kiss, so you have to marry me. How else can I explain it to my future wife?" Noel explained, not sure if Phoebe genuinely didn't understand or was just playing dumb.

Phoebe couldn't help but chuckle. Her smile was radiant with sarcasm. "Noel, honey, a first kiss isn't worth a dime. It's the first night that's priceless. Go find the woman responsible for that if you can even remember who she is, with all the women you've been with."

She knew his type well-another playboy. She wasn't going to be another notch on his belt.

"Phoebe, you're a woman. I'm shocked. How can you say such things?" Noel's voice showed a flicker of irritation.

"Playboy, I'm just being honest. If it had been my bed you'd ended up in, I'd take responsibility without a word. But you are expecting me to marry you over a kiss? That's an insult to my intelligence."

Noel's temper flared as he braked hard. He pulled over to the curb. "Phoebe, what did you just call me?"

"Playboy," she replied coolly. "Oh, you don't know what that means? Let me enlighten you - it's a sad, pitiful man who flits from woman to woman."

He was livid. "Phoebe." Her sharp tongue was infuriating. "Calling me a playboy? I'll have you know..."

She cut him off, "Oh, lighten up. I thought you are shameless. If you can't handle a little banter, you're not man enough to mess with me."

Their exchange ended with Noel

Ignoring his lineage, just his appearance alone would make any woman swoon.

Noel tried to entice her once more, "Phoebe, I'm serious. Think about being my girlfriend. Forget about last night. We can start fresh."

She scoffed, "With your reputation? I'd rather not."

"I'm not what you think," he insisted, but Phoebe wasn't having any of it.

“So? Should I schedule an appointment for you at Renaissance General Hospital? Your room is on the tenth floor, I believe."

After saying that, Phoebe sped away.

Renaissance General Hospital was a renowned psychiatric hospital in A City. It was said that the more severe the mental illness, the higher the floor the patient resided

on.

Noel pounded the steering wheel in frustration. That girl had a way of insulting people without so much as a single swear word. How was it that his buddy could just casually invite a woman out and end up witha wife, while he, in his attempts, was labeled a lunatic? He decided not to dwell on her wild antics from the

night before, nor on her twisted version of playing the victim. Yet, what really got under his skin was her complete lack of gratitude. Content belongs to Novelxo.org
