Grey came to my parents asking for their permission to court me while on his knees? Unbelievable! I thought to myself. Wonder, alarm, excitement,
and wariness came crashing down on me all at the same time. I looked at Mom and found her giving me another of her
mysterious smiles.
We finally finished arranging the roses in the vase. Mom rose from her seat and placed the antique vase in the center of the glass table before sitting
beside me on the plush sofa. Taking my hand, she spoke, “I only want you to be happy, Lily. And I can see how happy you are when you’re with him,
even though you try so hard to conceal how you really feel. I know deep down you still love him, but you’re afraid to get hurt again. But even though
we said yes and allowed him to court you, at the end of the day, you’re the one who decides if
you will accept him or not in your life. I’m simply telling you to give the man a chance, then make his courtship a living hell.”
I looked at Mom with a puzzled expression. Did she just tell me to torture Grey without directly saying it?
The soft cries coming from the crib reached my ears, and I abruptly rose from the sofa and hurried to pick up Isabelle. Instantly, she stopped crying
when I held her in my arms.
“You and Grey have a child–he doesn’t know the truth, though. But one day, when you’re finally ready to take him back, confess to him that you have
a child. Isabelle deserves to be
recognized by her father.” After saying that, Mom rose from the sofa and kissed me on the cheek. She did the same to Isabelle before leaving my
room.
It was my day off today, so I spent the day with Isabelle to make up for the times I wasn’t beside her. I bathed her, then changed her clothes.
Afterwards, I left her with the maid
while she sucked on her feeding bottle. I then took the chance to have a quick bath. When I finished, I took her to the expansive garden of the
mansion for a walk.
The flawless blue sky greeted me when I stepped outside. The gentle warmth of the sun caressing my skin felt so good as I walked across the lawn
with wiggling Isabelle in my

When I finally reached the garden, I discovered I wasn’t alone. The gardeners were busy trimming the grass and watering the plants and flowers in
the garden.
My eyes drifted across the rose bushes, where a tall, muscular man stood with his back to
his back.
He was noticeably tall and seemed out of place in the garden.
Did my parents hire another landscaper? The question lingered in my thoughts as I walked
toward him. As if he sensed someone was looking at him, his head turned in my direction,
and our gazes met.
Breath hitched in my throat as his mouth slowly curved into a dazzling smile that turned
my knees into jelly.
What was Grey doing here?
As though Isabelle sensed her father was nearby, she began to wiggle and make loud baby
noises.
“Good morning!” Grey greeted me. His smile turned into a grin, exposing a perfect set of teeth that could make any toothpaste commercial model feel
ashamed.
Still in shock at seeing him at the mansion, I ignored his greeting and asked, “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Working,” he replied nonchalantly with a shrug. He turned to Isabelle, his eyes lighting up like fireworks as he surveyed her angelic features. “Look
who we have here.”
Isabelle wiggled and flailed her chubby arms toward Grey as though she wanted him to take her..
I mentally shook my head while watching Isabelle’s excited baby noises, while Grey made a face that made her smile. She surely was a daddy’s girl.
It was a bit unfair, though, because

I was her mom, yet she seemed to favor Grey more.

“My hands are dirty. I can’t hold you,” Grey told Isabelle. As if she understood what he
meant, her smile faded, and soon she began to pout.
Grey pulled away, and when he did, Isabelle began to cry.
“You made her cry,” I told him, pouting in irritation.
I cradled Isabelle closer in my arms, then crooned in her ears until she stopped crying. I
wasn’t irritated that Grey made Isabelle cry; I was more irritated by the fact that she
seemed to ignore me every time he was around. The two of them had a world of their own.

“I wanted to hold her too, but I’m dirty and sweaty right now. Maybe I’ll do it some other time,” he said regretfully. “I’ll return to work now before my
future in–laws fire me.”
Grey picked up the scissors he had been holding, then returned to the rose bushes and
resumed trimming the edges.
I remained in my place, mouth slightly parted open. Did I hear it right? Did he just say
future in–laws?
Recovering my scattered wits, I marched toward him with a frown carved deep on my forehead. “What the hell are you doing?” I asked, my words
louder than intended.
“I told you, I’m working,” he replied without even looking at me.
“This isn’t your office, Grey.”
“I know... It’s my day off; that’s why I’m here.”
Was it a coincidence that his day off was the same as mine? Shaking my head in exasperation, I glared at him. “I’m asking you why you’re here. I’m
not playing with you.”
He must have sensed how serious I was right now; that was why he straightened and raised

his head to me. He let out a resigned sigh before he spoke. “It’s part of my courtship. I shall serve your family until I finally make you marry me again.”
I gaped at him incredulously. When I finally recovered, I raised my chin. “You’ll have to wait a couple of years or maybe a decade before that
happens.”
“I’ll wait even if it takes a century,” he replied without a trace of humor on his face.
“Do what you want. I’m not going to stop you, but I’m telling you this: getting what you want will never be easy.” After saying that, I turned my back to
him and walked away.
I felt his gaze follow my back until I was out of his sight.
